Pin the House on the Map – Finding the Right Location for your Next Home

There are a lot of things that play a factor when it comes to choosing the right location for your home – a lot of things that might slip under your radar, especially if this is your first time buying one.

So we’ve broken down some of those major factors that you’ll want to consider below in hopes of helping you become crystal clear on where you want to live.

Proximity of Schools

If you have little ones or are thinking of having little ones in the future, finding a home that’s in a school zone will be super important for you. Not only that, but making sure it’s a school you’re fond of also helps. Ensure you look into the school’s reputation, the classes and programs they offer, their online social media presence (it is 2020 afterall!) and if there is a bus route nearby. Keep in mind though that homes in close proximity to schools typically have a higher ticket price so don’t be alarmed.

Crime

While this isn’t the most fun one to talk about, it’s also something you should keep in mind. Luckily, there are easy tools you can use online (or even a quick Google search) that’ll indicate where there is crime in your town or city. A good resource for Windsor is the Windsor Police Incident Report found here.

Property Taxes

Your annual property taxes can vary according to a few different factors such as location, home type and whether or not it’s a commercial property. Without considering how much you’re paying in taxes, you could be setting yourself up for a big scare down the road. Any agent you work with should be able to show you the last year’s tax amount for any home you’re interested in to give you a rough idea of what you can expect.

Entertainment

What’s a home if you can’t at least enjoy the amenities around you. Take a look at the proximity of restaurants/bars, bowling alleys, movie theaters, malls/shopping centers, nature trails, recreational complexes etc. Those things that bring you the most joy in life… make sure to take a look to see if any of them are around you. For example, if you love to walk, you won’t be looking for a home in an area where there aren't many walking trails and if you love to eat out, odds are living in the county won’t be your cup o’ tea.

These are the four main things to consider when looking for a home in a particular neighbourhood, in addition to proximity to inlaws, dog parks near by for your fur friends and grocery stores around.
